The Joys of Pie Floaters and The Carnival of Australia

This week I had my first ever pie floater. I have lived in South Australia for almost six years and only this week, on a whim, when I went for lunch to Cafe Villis, I was able to sample this gourmet delight.

A pie floater, a South Australian delicacy consists of a traditional Australian meat pie covered with tomato sauce and inverted in a plate of thick green pea soup. It was recognised as a South Australian Heritage Item by the National Trust of Australia.

As you can see, mine had a lot of soup. Delicious.

Speaking of Australian Cultural Icons, the latest Carnival of Australia is published here. Or you could take the slow path by scrolling down.

Enjoy.

Interesting, I have never tried one of them. Not sure I really want to, though... Maybe if I make to South Australia one day I will give it a try.

I remember as a kid my mother would take me into Sydney downtown shopping and we would have lunch at David Jones and we would have a meat pie with gravy and green peas. I thought it was great but I loved Vegemite too at that time and I can't stand the stuff now.

I really liked the soup. Stick to your ribs sort of stuff. The lady who served me, no spring chicken assured me that she had never had and never would eat a pie floater.

I always wanted to try one, but now I am gluten-intolerant, I cannot!

It's a bit of a worry that the server wouldn't even eat one, eh? OY!

It looks ... revolting! But I bet it smelled and tasted good.

I used to think they were bad bad bad until we had a fit of madness at work one day (many years ago) and had pie floater day.

We made the pea soup, bought a bunch of pies, and had floaters all round for lunch.

You only need one, they are very filling. They look bad, but actually, they are not bad at all!
